The music program was founded by harmonica artist and author, Jon Gindick, in honor of bluesman Sonny Boy Williamson II, who is buried in a country field just outside of town. Servicing 30 to 40 kids each year, the program has run for eight years and is funded though fundraisers and private donations of all sizes.

Learning to play a musical instrument is proven to improve brain function, provide happiness, as well as the joy of artistic emotional expression— and what better place for a program than the stomping grounds of Sonny Boy Williamson II, aka "Rice Miller? This area is where the blues was born.

Since 2010, the program has “given back” to the blues source by hiring local blues musicians to teach guitar, bass, drums, vocals in twice weekly afternoon sessions that have really produced results. Most schools don’t have Music Programs, Tutwiler kids do.

The children have formed blues bands and have performed at local events. For the most part, the program has all the instruments it needs. Acoustic and electric guitars, basses, keys, mixers, ukes, two sets of drums, persuasion instruments.

So in general: Your cash donation will help pay for our caring and consistent teachers.

Please Donate — and when you do, please specify if you’d like the money to go towards the music program.
